48-hour dispersal order put in place for Derby city centre

A dispersal order lasting 48 hours has been put in place for Derby city centre following increased reports of anti-social behaviour.

The Section 34 notice will cover the area highlighted in red on the map and began at 1pm on Friday 1 August and will last until 1pm on Sunday 3 August.

The order has been introduced following an increase in calls about anti-social behaviour, street drinking and drug offences in the city centre.

It means officers have the power to ask a group of two or more people to leave the dispersal area if they are committing anti-social behaviour, or if we believe they may, or are likely to, cause a nuisance to someone else.

Anyone committing an offence who refuses to obey the order can be arrested and fined up to £2,500 and/or receive a three-month prison sentence.

Temporary Chief Inspector Matthew Ladd said: “We always give careful consideration when deciding to introduce dispersal orders to ensure they are absolutely necessary.

“The order has been introduced to provide officers with additional powers to target those people who are intent on causing disruption to our daily life in the city centre.”
